LAWRENCE, Kan.( AP) Bill Self was first introduced to what he calls “Kansas math” when he inherited a programme designed that just lost performs Nick Collison and Kirk Hinrich to the NBA and was still were supposed to earn the Big 12 title.

Anywhere else, that would have been ground for a rebuild.

But there is no such concept as rebuilding on Naismith Drive , not when Self would lose all five starters afterwards in his vocation, or the bulk of his 2008 national entitlement crew. And that sounds true again this season, when the Jayhawks are expected to earn their 14 th straight forum title despite losing national participate of its first year Frank Mason III to graduation and No. 4 overall enlist pick Josh Jackson to the NBA.

“When we took the number of jobs now, Kansas math astonished me, because you lose Collison and you lose Hinrich but we’re supposed to acquire it all the next year because that’s the minds, ” Self said. “But I also think that’s a positive, extremely, because the mindset with these participates is that,` We’re going to miss those chaps but somebody is going to step up and do it.”SSSS

There are plenty of chaps capable of stepping right up.

Start with Devonte Graham, who averaged more than 13 details last-place season while taking a backseat persona to Mason in the backcourt. Shed in Lagerald Vick, another sentry capable of scoring in knots, and fellow patrol Svi Mykhailiuk, who eluded NBA overtures for one more season with the Jayhawks.

Seven-foot, 280 -pound center Udoka Azubuike is back after an injury sidelined him much of last-place season.

Then there are the immigrants: Mississippi State transfer Malik Newman is eligible after redshirting, Arizona State transfer Sam Cunliffe will become eligible in December, and freshman guard Marcus Garrett and five-star prospect Billy Preston give the roster versatility and childish exuberance.

All the ingredients to make another championship run.

“Everybody’s just got to stay healthy, ” said Graham, an All-America candidate. “Keep doing what we’ve is being done, and articulated ourselves in a good situation in March. Wreaking hard, starting now.”

As the Jayhawks being seek of their sixth national claim, here are some of its most important story lines 😛 TAGEND

MARCH MADNES

Despite the conference of the states parties preeminence, the Jayhawks have fought the past five years in the NCAA Tournament. They’ve been rebounded the opening weekend twice, lost in the Sweet 16 and were knocked out of the regional finals each of the last two seasons.

“Getting over that lump, ” Graham said. “Been to two Elite Eights and forgotten — that’s certainly something on my pail register that I want to do.”

SPIRITED PRACTICE

They won’t meet the storey this season, but the Jayhawks will still benefit from a trio of changes in Dedric and K.J. Lawson from Memphis and Charlie Moore from Cal. The trio has to sit out under NCAA powers, just like Newman did last season, but are able to work out against Kansas in practice. In other terms, good luck ascertaining a better scout crew anywhere in the country.

TOUGH SCHEDULE

The Jayhawks always have one of the nation’s toughest planneds, and this year is no exception. They open with Kentucky in the Champions Classic in Chicago, participate Syracuse in Miami and have non-conference activities against Washington, Arizona State, Nebraska, Stanford and Texas A& M. Throw in the double-round robin of the Big 12 and the Jayhawks will have a brutal road to March.

NBA CAN WAIT

Graham briefly weighed growing pro before telling Self that he’d return to Lawrence, while Mykhailiuk dipped his toes in the pro irrigates. Some even thought that Newman would skip frisking for Kansas and rotate pro, though he insists that was never his proposal. Irrespective, the Jayhawks could have been a whole lot different this season if they made up their memories in a different direction.

NEWMAN’S OWN

Once deemed to be a top-1 0 recruit, Newman is looking for a busines reboot after averaging 11.3 times during his lone season at Mississippi State. He extended the Jayhawks in tallying at 18.5 items per competition during a tour to Italy in early August, and his experience should allow him to slip right into Mason’s spot on the perimeter to give Kansas one of the nation’s good backcourts.

“Motivation is the privilege parole, ” Newman said, “because you don’t want to be that mount of guards people say,` This is the first place that Bill Self had that wasn’t tough.’ He’s known for having tough guards.”
